The Everyday Heroes: Phased In... Fuzzed Out... and
Turned On!
It was the beginning of a new millennium, not the Y2K scare, but the
true to life dawn of a new age, 2001... A Space Odyssey. Somewhere in Columbus, Ohio, a
revolution was being forged...
On a cool spring day in May, two boys met over a mutual love of music. Mike Savage (since dubbed "Mick" by the band), a baby faced
terror behind a drum kit, and Zac Szymusiak, a six-string
guitarslinger and believable singer, found themselves ducking, weaving, and rocking their
way to a new musical beat, their own. At first, drumsticks and strings were broken and
hopes overdriven; but the only solution for most setbacks in life is time. As spring
blossomed into summer and summer faded into fall, the boys continued to study the
audiocentrics of their personal brand of Rock'n'Roll: Punk Rawk Energy, New Wave
synthesizers, and a Pop sensibility worn like a warm V-neck sweater on a cold winter day.
Along the way they even played a few shows with a wide cast of friends joining in and
having a good time, something they hope you have too.
Just as they were about to start making a concept record detailing the
decrepit state of modern joke telling... Kyle McKee joined the
band, mic in hand and bass guitar slung over his shoulder like a worn denim jacket. Part
Paul McCartney, part John Entwistle... all sweet and soulful. Although, his sense of
melody, is only overshadowed by his exquisite taste in shoes.
In science, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The
addition of a neutron or electron can disturb a fragile mix of chemistry. The same can be
said for bands. The addition of Kyle caused a chain reaction, which has taken the band
from flickers of cohesion, to a sparkling supernova of musical stardust. Mick's drumming
has become more powerful and focused, Zac's singing soars in new found confidence, his
guitar playing, melodic buzzsaw bursts, have been honed to precision. All the while, Kyle
is finding his footing and the space between the notes to put his own personal stamp on
the tunes. This musical potluck is premium blend.
The end of 2001 and the beginning of "ought-2" saw the boys
document their initial musical steps. Recorded in December and January, their debut EP, Different, Like Everyone Else, saw them try on a few musical
guises; but all the while, making you tap your feet to the monstrous beat or sing along
with the aching but glorious melodies. From the initial explosion of "Broken Hearted
Valentine", to the closing hiss, hum and fade of "Audiac Arrest", this is
one trip you don't want to miss.
The future looks bright for these boys. As if there wasn't enough moxie
to go around, their energetic live show is being honed into a tight cohesive musical
explosion. Like every good "American Band," they'll be rolling into your town
soon, so watch out! Call the Police, Call the Fire Department, Call all the Kids, this is
a Five-Alarm Rock'n'Roll Emergency.
