Lately music has been a rough word to define for me. There are so many choices in musical styles out there that I have never been able to pick just one. I grew up in a small farming town called South Charleston, Ohio and didn't get much of an exposure to music other than my parents music and what I heard pumping out of the local top 40 station. So when I arrived on the scene in Columbus at The Ohio State University (back in 1996) my eyes were truly opened up to a whole different reality- and its never been the same since. I can look back now and know that late 80's bands like Bon Jovi and Poison really were not the only style of music that the rock or pop world had to offer- although the industry would like for you to think that. BANDS DID EXIST OUTSIDE OF THE RADIO OR MTV!! WOW! And now I find myself sifting through the likes of The Hives, The Strokes, Thursday, Sugar Cult, The Argument and many other bands on the cusp of stardom- not the bands that just form one day and make a video for MTV the next. I think at least 60% of the music I listen to are things you will rarely hear on the radio, if at all.

I challenge all of you out there to find a local band that gets no normal air play and support them. Learn to love a band for who and what they are not just because you here their damn song once every hour at work. Go out and buy a CD that was hand made by the band whose music is actually on it! Call and request that band at your local radio station. If they don't do local stuff then suggest that they should! If more people did this we could all enjoy a well rounded sound on the radio. And if you think that is dumb then just let those record executives decide what kind of music that you need to hear. Everyone is so picky about their musical tastes anyway, why not give yourself a larger pool of musicians to select from!!
