CD Review

Artist: The Everyday Heroes
Title: EP - Different Like Everyone Else
Label: Independant
Released: 2002

This power-pop trio from Columbus, Ohio, is reminding all of us what pure rock-and-roll is all about. Their debut EP contains five tracks of hard party music, with no filler to spoil the bunch. Listeners will find trace elements of The Ramones, The Romantics, The Cars, and synth-pop bands of the early 80's. The hooks are sharp, and the riffs are dangerous. The opening track "Broken Hearted Valentine" kicks down the door with crunching guitar and bass, while the vocals really grab the listener by the throat. The second track, "Glampires", is a raucous romp with a greaser feel to it. The drumming by Mike Savage really shines on this track. "A Girl Called Love" is a melodic marvel, featuring some wonderful bass work by Kyle McKee, and a killer guitar-driven bridge by Zac Szymusiak. "Po-Go" is a light-hearted jab at me-first slackers, and Zac brings the listener up to speed with an unbelievable feedback-driven clap chant.

The final track is the real gem here, "Audiac Arrest". This song is radio-ready, and the guitar riff really takes hold of you. The bridge is both spacy and trippy, and the harmonies really elevate the disc to another level. The final chant of "fade away…" dissolves into a hissy hummy soup that swirls neatly down the drain. In the face of today's ever-changing musical landscapes, The Everyday Heroes are certainly doing something right.
